\par \pard This document describes aspects of my work for Prosynth that have been achieved. It also describes what is likely to be implemented before March 1998.
\par \pard
\par 1. A Survey of publicly available pronunciation dictionaries
\par
\par \pard \li720 The aim of the survey was to find out about computer-readable resources that might be useful for the construction of a pronunciation dictionary out of the Prosynth database. The following were identified:
\par \pard \li720
\par {\pntext\pard\plain\f1 \'b7\tab}\pard \fi-283\li1003{\*\pn \pnlvlblt\pnf1\pnstart1\pnindent283\pnhang{\pntxtb \'b7}}BEEP\tab a British English Example Pronunciation Dictionary
\par {\pntext\pard\plain\f1 \'b7\tab}\pard \fi-283\li1003{\*\pn \pnlvlblt\pnf1\pnstart1\pnindent283\pnhang{\pntxtb \'b7}}CMU\tab the Carlegie-Mellon University Pronunciator
\par {\pntext\pard\plain\f1 \'b7\tab}LIMSI
\par {\pntext\pard\plain\f1 \'b7\tab}LPD\tab the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary
\par {\pntext\pard\plain\f1 \'b7\tab}MOBY\tab the Moby Pronunciator
\par {\pntext\pard\plain\f1 \'b7\tab}MRC\tab the Medical Research Council Lexicon
\par {\pntext\pard\plain\f1 \'b7\tab}OALD\tab the Oxford Advanced Learners\rquote Dictionary
\par \pard
\par \pard \li720
Since Prosynth is concerned only with British English, BEEP, LPD, MRC and OALD became the natural candidates, among which OALD is felt to be the most consistent and will thus be used as a basis for the construction of the Prosynth pronunciator.
\par \pard \li720
\par \pard \li720 For details, see my 10/10/97 document {\i A Survey of Publicly Accessible Pronunciation Dictionaries}, archived at
\par \pard \li720
\par {\f11\fs20 http://pitch.phon.ucl.ac.uk/project/prosynth_archives/0044.html}.
\par
\par \pard 2. A robust pronunciation retrieval engine for Prosynth
\par \pard
\par \pard \li720
A robust search engine has been implemented that retrieves the IPA transcription of a given word from a lexical database. Searches are constrained by the grammatical category of the given word so that heterophonic homographs can be appropriately disambigu
ated. For instance, the specification of [1] {\i produce} as a noun will correctly locate {\f11\fs20 \lquote pr/0/dj/U/s}. The search engine also provides information about stress pattern and number of syllables, which, in the case of [1], are encoded as
{\f11\fs20 sw}: two syllables, the first being strong and the second weak.
\par \pard \li720
\par \pard \keep\keepn 3. A prosodic parser
\par \pard \keep\keepn
\par \pard \li720\keep\keepn A prosodic parser has also been implemented that indicates boundaries for feet, accent groups (AG) and intonational phrase (IP). The implemented was carried out according to specifications in Jill House\rquote s document {\i
Prosodic Parsing}, archived at
\par \pard \li720
\par {\f11\fs20 http://pitch.phon.ucl.ac.uk/project/prosynth_archives/0055.html}.
\par \pard \li720
\par The input phrase [2] {\i the delay}, for instance, receives the following analysis:
\par
\par \pard \li720 {\f11\fs20 <IP>
\par <AG>
\par <FOOT ipa="[D/@/][d/I/" stp="ww" lex="the"></FOOT>
\par <FOOT ipa="'l/eI/]" stp="s" lex="delay"></FOOT>
\par </AG>
\par </IP>
\par }\pard
\par \pard \li720 Each input utterance is by default analysed as an IP, which may embed other IPs in the case of a complex clause. Compound nouns, such as [3] {\i phonetics department}, are treated as multi-feet AGs. [4] {\i I\rquote
m trying to find the Phonetics Department} will be analysed as
\par \pard \li720
\par \pard \li720 {\f11\fs20 <IP ID="1">
\par <AG ID="1">
\par <FOOT ID="1" IPA="[/aI/][XXXXX]" STP="w">I 'm</FOOT>
\par </AG>
\par <AG ID="2">
\par <FOOT ID="2" IPA="['tr/aI//I/N][t/@/]" STP="sw">trying to</FOOT>
\par </AG>
\par <AG ID="3">
\par <FOOT ID="3" IPA="['f/aI/nd][D/@/][f/@/" STP="sww">find the</FOOT>
\par </AG>
\par <AG ID="4">
\par <FOOT ID="4" IPA="'n/e/t/I/ks][d/I/" STP="sw">Phonetics</FOOT>
\par <FOOT ID="5" IPA="'p/A/tm/@/nt]" STP="">Department</FOOT>
\par </AG>
\par </IP>
\par }\pard \li720
\par \pard \li720
NB: [2]-[4] all have unstressed feet-initial syllables, which are then defaulted to IP-initial AGs. This may be a nuisance but they are highly predictable and can be discounted at a later stage. If it cannot be accepted for one reason or another, it can b
e changed as soon as a decision is made.
\par \pard \li720
\par \pard 4. A program that generates database component files
\par \pard
\par \pard \li720 A program has been written that generates the following types of component files for the Prosynth database:
\par \pard \li720
\par {\pntext\pard\plain\f1 \'b7\tab}\pard \fi-283\li1003{\*\pn \pnlvlblt\pnf1\pnstart1\pnindent283\pnhang{\pntxtb \'b7}}word file
\par {\pntext\pard\plain\f1 \'b7\tab}\pard \fi-283\li1003{\*\pn \pnlvlblt\pnf1\pnstart1\pnindent283\pnhang{\pntxtb \'b7}}syntax file
\par {\pntext\pard\plain\f1 \'b7\tab}prosody file
\par \pard
\par \pard \li720 Each file has been coded in an XML style, to be incorporated by Mark Huckvale into a database accessible via WWW pages. See Appendix for sample files. Initial annotations of Phase1 DB material are archived at
\par \pard \li720
\par {\f11\fs20 http://pitch.phon.ucl.ac.uk/project/prosynth_archives/0063.html}.
\par
\par \pard \keep\keepn 5. AUTASYS and the Survey Parser
\par \pard \keep\keepn
\par \pard \li720\keep\keepn My automatic wordclass tagging system, AUTASYS, and the automatic Survey Parser are used to analyse database material for grammatical and syntatic information. For a description of the tagging system, see
