The main reason why "non-standard" phatic utterances require more processing effort
is that in order to be recognized as phatic (i.e. for them to produce the
phatic perlocutionary effect) addressees need to recover the "familiar in the unfamiliar"
- recognize the salient standard phatic frame underlying the used of the novel expression.
