    6th ENGLISH APPLIED LINGUISTICS SEMINAR (VI ELIA)
    THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
    University of Seville, Spain (May 16-18, 2001)

    The research group "La lengua inglesa en el ambito universitario" of the

    Department of English Philology at the University of
    Seville (Spain) is organizing the 6th English Applied Linguistics
    Seminar (VI ELIA) to be held in May 16-18, 2001. V ELIA ('Pragmatics:
    Theory and
    Practice') took place in Seville on April 1999 with the participation as

    plenary speakers of Prof. Deirdre Wilson (UCL) and
    Prof. Jenny Thomas (University of Wales at Bangor), an an attendance of
    over 40 researchers from areas such as Pragmatics,
    Discourse Analysis, Language Learning & Acquisition, Phonetics and
    translation.

    The topic of this year's seminar will be 'The development of
    communicative competence: past, present and future'. The
    presence of the following Keynote speakers has already been confirmed:
    Prof. Enrique Alcaraz (University of Alicante, Spain)
    Prof. Guy Cook (University of Reading, UK)
    Prof. Gabriele Kasper (Univeristy of Hawaii, USA)

    SUBMISSIONS: We invite submissions related but not limited to the
    following topics: Second Language Learning, Acquisiton,
    teaching; Pragmatics & Discourse Analysis; Phonetics, and Translation.
    Three kinds of submissions are proposed: papers (45
    or 60 minutes, the last ten minutes will be devoted to discussion) and
    workshops (60 minutes). Participants should submit
    one-page abstract (500 words, Times 12) and a step-by-step outline of
    the presentation. The abstract should be accompanied
    by a cover letter stating name, address, affiliation, email address,
    phone and fax numbers. Electronic submissions (RTF,
    ASCII, HTML) are highly encouraged and may sent to one of the
    organizers; if you do not have email access you can send 2
    printed copies of your abstract and outline to the address below.

    DATES: The deadeline for the submission of abstracts and outlines to be
    considered for acceptance is FEBRUARY 28, 2001.
    Contributors will be notified of the refereeing committee's decision by
    MARCH 31. Selected contributions will be published in
    the 4th issue of the series ELIA.

    FEES:
    -Students or unemployed: 3.500 ptas (approx. Euro 21)
    -Other attendants: 7.000 ptas (approx. Euro 42) until April 16, 2001 &
    9.000 ptas (approx. Euro 54) from April 16, 2001
    onwards.
    -Speakers: 10.000 ptas (approx. Euro 60) until April 16, 2001 & 12.000
    ptas (approx. Euro 72) from April 16,2001
    onwards.

    The registration fee should be deposited in the account
    2071.0904.34.0107295038 (Caja San Fernando de Sevilla). Please
