1. AUTHORS: Arthur Dirksen (Institute for Perception Research, Eindhoven), John Coleman (Oxford University Phonetics Laboratory)

2. FORM OF MATERIAL: Software speech synthesis system

3. SUBJECT AREA: Acoustic phonetics/ Speech perception/ Prosody

4. LEVEL: Advanced

5. SPECIFIC DETAILS: IPOX- An all-prosodic Speech Synthesis Architecture. Software which runs under Windows on a 486PC with a windows compatible 16-bit sound card (e.g. a Soundblaster 16). The software will include an on-line Hypertext help system and a tutorial. A speech synthesis system based on YorkTalk, which uses declarative, constraint-based grammars to analyse (phonemic) input. The output of analysis is a metrical-prosodic tree, the nodes of which are assigned a temporal and parametric phonetic interpretation in terms of parameters for the Klatt synthesizer. The system consists of a rule compiler and a run-time system, which visualizes the various data structures, and integrates synthesis and sound output. At present, the system comes with a set of rules for synthesis of British English syllables, words and (very short and simple) utterances. These rules were adapted from an earlier version of YorkTalk.

6. COST: No cost for non-commercial purposes

7. DATE WHEN AVAILABLE: Demos available now on the World wide web. Late Summer 1995, demos on the World wide web.
