Setting up a PC on UCL Dept Phon/Ling Network
This is for PCs owned and configured by the department. If you want to connect
your own PC to the Internet from a network socket in the Department see
Connecting a non departmental PC to Phonetics and Linguistics Network
This assumes the PC is using MS Windows95/98/NT/2000/XP etc and has the
software installed for its network card which is connected to a network
wall socket.
Obtain a name and IP address for the PC from Network administrator.
The menu names used below may vary slightly for different versions of
Windows.
Click on: start settings control panel network
Enter the following under network and its sub menus:-
Identification
The Computer name for this PC: (eg pc250)
Workgroup name: WORKGROUP
TCP/IP
IP address for this PC: (eg 128.40.52.250)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 128.40.52.245 If PC is in Wolfson House
128.40.30.245 If PC is in Gordon Square
DNS
Host name: name of this pc
Domain: phon.ucl.ac.uk
DNS search order: 144.82.100.1
: 144.82.100.41
: 144.82.100.97
Domain Suffix Search order: phon.ucl.ac.uk
: ucl.ac.uk
: bcc.ac.uk
Ensure you can see remote departmental network computer names under network
neighbourhood and that web browser connects to remote sites.
Install auto updating anti virus software. (F-Secure)
Install recommended Microsoft security patches.
Set for automatic updating of security patches from Microsoft site.
Configure for e-mail
In the e-mail program menu (Eurdora, Outlook Mozilla Thunderbird etc) enter the correct
server settings. If you are using a UCL IS address, you will find the settings here
