Using Your Phon/Ling E-mail address  when outside UCL

From any web browser on the Internet

There are a number of free webmail sites on the Internet which can be used and one on the
UCL Department of Phonetics & Linguistics server which has the advantage of allowing
folders to be stored in your networked disk space on the local server. To use this see webmail

From a PC mail program (eg Eudora, Outlook etc)

To use your Department of Phonetics & Linguistics UCL e-mail address from a PC
outside UCL you must connect to the Internet via an outside Internet Service Provider.
You also need to configure your PC email program (eg Eudora, Outlook Express) to use
the UCL IS Central secure SMTP server for sending mail (smtp2-server.ucl.ac.uk) and
the UCL Department of Phonetics and Linguistics POP server for receiving mail
(mail1.phon.ucl.ac.uk). You also need to enter your UCL central and your Phonetics &
Linguistics usernames and passwords respectively to use these servers.

Instructions for configuring a PC email program to use the UCL secure SMTP server for
sending mail while allowing a departmental POP (or IMAP) server to receive email are
available here

www.ucl.ac.uk/is/home/departmental.htm

When following these instructions you should replace occurances of "Helpdesk"
with your real name, email address and IS Central systems login name/username as
indicated. Your Phonetics and Linguistics username is needed for receiving mail and
should be left as previously set.

Ensure you have entered the correct username for the sending server, confirmed by
your UCL username and server name smtp2-server.ucl.ac.uk listed when you are prompted
for the password when sending. You can test if your UCL central username and password
work by attempting to access www.ucl.ac.uk/fsecure

Extra instructions for Eudora

After completing the changes indicated, click on Tools, Personalities, then
right click on "Secure SMTP". Under properties, Incoming Mail, enter under
Server: smtp2-server.ucl.ac.uk, then click on OK. (NB this entry is
to make Eudora prompt you for the password for your UCL IS account when you
send. You don't actually get your mail from this server but from
mail1.phon.ucl.ac.uk or mail2.phon.ucl.ac.uk which should be already entered
under Tools, Options, Checking Mail with your Phon & Ling username).
