Using the UCL Department of  Phonetics & Linguistics Webmail System

This web email system is for users assigned a UCL Department of Phonetics and Linguistics email address. It gives these users access to their email from any web browser on the Internet and is available at https://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/webmail. Here a prompt will appear for your Phonetics and Linguistics username and password.

After first time login a menu will appear  for personalised settings. The important one is your email From address where the default will be correct if your address is user_name@phon.ucl.ac.uk. Otherwise set it to user_name@ling.ucl.ac.uk. Any other options you require can be set later from within webmail via the 'User preferences' icon.

Select  "Save" at the bottom of page to take you to your email inbox listing and webmail menu.

IMPORTANT
If you save messages to folders  you will not be able to access them using POP mail. These folders are created  in your server login directory under MAIL. They can also be accessed by IMAP mail and Unix 'mutt' mail also available on this server. You can however use webmail to copy or move messages from a folder to inbox and then retrieve them to your PC using POP mail.

The displayed "Quota usage" refers to your server login directory only (bell:/home/login_name) or login_name via the bell icon from your PC. This contains webmail folders you have created and any data you have put there by other means.

The number of  MB or KB  listed to the right of this refer to the usage of the folder or inbox selected. This lists the total amount stored here, not quota usage. The default inbox quota allocation is 50MB. More can be requested but messages should not be stored here as you will not receive new mail if this quota is exceeded.

Holding the mouse pointer over the webmail menu icons gives descriptions of their functions. In case of difficulty, General help for the webmail system is available. A number of additional features described in this general help are not available.

By default new mail arriving is checked for every 10 minutes.  This can be changed under  User preferences,  Refresh Interval  or by clicking on  Refresh  to check for new mail just arrived.
