RE: ICSLP 98 CONFERENCE

Dear Author,

Here are some reviewers' comments on your summary:

Title: Syllable-onset acoustic properties associated with syllable-coda voicing

Not clear whether the subjects' accents differed: there are
interesting implications in the bigestural representation of dark /l/
proposed by Sproat & Fujimura (presumably two gestures may on average
take longer to execute than one) which might be addressed at least
when this paper is written up.

The second hypothesis re. coda voicing
being associated with the whole syllable is important, and its
implications merit careful consideration. An interesting line for
future research might be to look at the effect of coda consonant
reduction (e.g. /l/-vocalisation in English, or devoicing in e.g.
Yorkshire English or German) to assess whether onset voicing
properties emerge as predicted by the hypothesis.

The abstract itself stands out as a model of clarity, and the authors
should be applauded for the care they have taken in its preparation.

This sounds like very good evidence AGAINST a segmental view of speech
perception and production, though you seem inclined at the end to
weigh each equally. I suppose you discuss the idea that the rather
small differences you have found would likely be imperceptible on a
segment-by-segment basis?
