Working Group
Computer-Aided Learning and Use
of Internet
Contents
We see the broad aim of the working group to promote the use of
computer aided learning and the use of the internet in the education
of phonetics and speech communication sciences in Europe.
Our belief in the importance of this broad aim stems from some
special characteristics of our field:
- our subject involves many disciplines, often located in different
academic departments. We can use the Internet to communicate
materials, tools and expertise.
- speech communication is both aural and visual. We can use
the Web as a multimedia publishing platform.
- the training of practical skills is often difficult. Skills
training can be more effective with computer-based self-study.
- the study of language benefits from access to the variety
of languages. The internet gives a student unlimited access to
real foreign language materials.
- good quality teaching ideas and materials are in demand.
International co-operation leads to a spreading of good practice
that improves quality and reduces duplication of effort,
Our group started its activities in January 1997. Over a period
of three years, its objectives are:
- to bring together information about resources and tools for
computer aided learning,
- to promote the use of the internet to disseminate information
and teaching materials,
- to make recommendations for future development, and
- to set up an infrastructure which will survive beyond the
end of the Socrates project.
Our past and current activities are as follows:
- To maintain an e-mail list of people interested in hearing
about Computer aided learning in Speech Communication. To register
for this list send a mail to tn-calint@essex.ac.uk.
- To maintain a register of Internet accessible resources related
to teaching in Speech Communication. Browse inventory contents
here. Register a new resource.
- To maintain a register of Web-based tutorials in Speech Communication.
Browse list of tutorials here.
Register a new tutorial.
- To provide information to potential students, authors and
course administrators about the use of the web for teaching in
Speech Communication.
Our first year activities are reported in the following two publications:
- M. Huckvale, C. Benoit, C. Bowerman, A. Eriksson, M. Rosner,
M. Tatham, B. Williams, "Computer Aided Learning and Use
of the Internet", in "The Landscape of Future Education",
