Call for Articles
METAREPRESENTATION IN THE ARTS
Sheffield Hallam's electronic journal Working Papers on the Web will be publishing a special issue on Metarepresentation in the Arts, to be edited by Dr Barbara MacMahon. In recent years metarepresentation has become a central topic in cognitive and evolutionary psychology, theories of mind-reading and cognitive pragmatics. Verbal and visual arts such as literature, art and film can involve rich, complex and embedded metarepresentations, and music would also seem to hold metarepresentational potential. As such the arts offer an interesting direction for further research in this area. We therefore invite articles which explore and develop the concept of metarepresentation with reference to any of the arts.
The aim of Working Papers on the Web is to produce a high quality, cutting edge series of collections of essays. The Department of English at Sheffield Hallam brings together staff and postgraduates working in English literature and literary theory, creative writing and linguistics, and this series of working papers reflects the way that the department integrates these three interests. Each series of working papers is commissioned by a staff member of the English Studies department, researchers in the field, from other universities and from Sheffield Hallam, are asked to contribute essays.
Each of the collections of essays is organised around a theme or theoretical issue. All of the papers are refereed by at least two external specialists. Working Papers on the Web is posted on the Internet and is available without charge at www.shu.ac.uk/wpw
There is an editorial board within the department and an advisory board of external researchers who are consulted about the content and direction of the journal, and who also referee articles.
Style notes and other requirements
Article length: 6,000-8,000 words
Abstract: not more than 300 words
Section headings: bold, lower case (other than first letter of first word)
Sub-section headings: italic, lower case (other than first letter of first word)
Tables and figures should be numbered and given a title
Use endnotes, not footnotes
Use a works cited list
Follow MLA referencing conventions
Number pages in the centre of the footer
Do not put your name or affiliation on any page of the article.
Give your name and affiliation along with the title of the article on a separate page.

Deadline for Submission: November 31st 2006
Publication of the special issue is anticipated for June 2007.
