Additional notes on completing TN-086
How to raise the alarm: -
Press any red break glass call point. These are situated in
every lift lobby and on every floor on the rear staircase. Additional points
also exist including by every fire exit. You will always pass one on your way
out of the building.
How to call fire brigade: -
Dial 222 from an internal phone this will get you through
UCL comms. room who will be able to help with any emergency. As a last resort
dial 999.
Physical walk of fire escape routes: -
As you are completing this as a refresher you should have
a knowledge of the building and will have been shown these as part of your
initial induction. All fire routes can be found at https://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/home/dave/safety/index.htm
let me know if you need further advice. I can go through them with you on Teams
if you are not sure.
The fire assembly point is on the corner of Wakefield Street
and Handle Street by the entrance to the park. Please keep off the road and on
the pavement.
Smoke resisting fire doors will close automatically and
fire curtains will descend automatically when the alarm is activated. This is
to keep fire escape routes smoke free. Do not block any of these.
Smoke doors exist on the Ground and Third floors, you
may still go through these doors if necessary but should use the exit on your
side of the door if possible.
A smoke curtain exists in the basement to separate the
atrium from the stairs. Exit from the basement atrium, B01 & B02 is via the
fire exit in B01. B02 also has an additional exit via the rear stairs. The
ground floor security desk also has a fire curtain.
The lift should not be used as a means of escape unless
specified in a PEEP.
All fire extinguishers are water mist and can be used on all
fires including electrical.
First aid information is shown in lift lobbies and
reception. During Covid pandemic this may be limited, see notice in lobby.
Emergency release Mechanisms: -
Fire exits from B07, B01, B02 into B01, the library rear
exit, G10 & 118 and the rear stairs are all fitted with push bar doors.
Press down firmly on these to exit. An intruder alarm will also activate.
All doors normally held shut by electromagnets will release
on activation of the fire alarm. If there were any problems with these there is
a green break glass by each one which will cut the power to them.
Additional Information: -
You have a duty of care to make sure anyone in your care,
including students or subjects, leave the building. Fire Evacuation Marshals,
in fluorescent jackets, will sweep the building but may not always be present.

all doors behind you. Do not return until instructed to do so by the Fire
Brigade or UCL fire officer.
