EU TIDE project DICTUM - As leader of UCL's contribution to the project, Dr Faulkner has attended two working academic meetings in 1996, in the Netherlands and Brussels.

Organised (with Jialu Zhang) the Sino-British Joint Workshop on Cochlear Implants and Speech Signal Processing Aids, Beijing 1996 (Proceedings of which formed final report to the British Council for the Academic Links with China Scheme Project award to UCL/AJF)

Invited to participate as an expert on a French body called AUPELF which is a French national body awarding and monitoring research grants for projects all over the French speaking world concerning the French language.

WARWICK SMITH

Is involved in activities to make electrical and optical brain imaging available as a tool for research into speech and hearing for the department. Has links with Dept of Physiology UCL, Department of Medical Physics UCL and the Great Ormond Street Hospital. Has been working with the Medical Research Council Cognitive Development Unit in developing their ERP (Event Related Potential) electrical brain imaging system using state of the art high density electrode arrays, with a view for its use by the Department of Phonetics and Linguistics for research.

In February Roel hosted a visit by Dr. Allard Jongman of the Dept. of Modern Languages and Linguistics, Cornell university, Ithaca, New York, USA. Dr. Jongman gave a talk entitled 'Acoustic-phonetic variability and perceptual invariance'.

External Academic Activities:
Participated in EU TIDE project OSCAR meetings in Denmark, Netherlands and UK.

Participated in Sino-British Joint Workshop on Cochlear Implants and Speech Signal Processing Aids, Beijing 1996. Presented paper on UCL work in Speech Signal Processing Hearing Aids and Bioglass and Titanium based cochlear implants.

Contributed to the Department of Health Medical Devices Agency Device Bulletin Electromagnetic Compatibility of Medical Devices with Mobile Communications.

Acted as independent expert project assessor to the EU TIDE programme HEARDIP.
