Option Courses

Choosing an option course

Points to consider:

  • Options must have some demonstrable relevance to the degree as a whole.
  • You can choose options in any department in the University and even from another London College. All we say is that there should be some way in which the option can be considered relevant to your education.
  • Consider the breadth of your current studies. You might choose courses which widen your experience, for example in History of Medicine, Anthropology or Computing.
  • Consider your career development. Are there areas of communication which specially interest you? This might be a good time to speak to the careers advisory service. You might choose a course in a foreign language or in management principles.
  • Consider how the course is assessed. Some courses are continuously assessed; some may have their written papers outside the normal summer timetable. How will the assessment load affect your other courses?
  • Consider how the course in timetabled. The 2nd year BSc Speech Communication timetable will only give you one day free. Also note that for many Departments accurate course timetables do not become available until September.

Options are chosen in the first week of the autumn term. They are entered on your Course Registration and Examination Entry Form (CREEF). To select an option course, enter the title, department and course value on the form and have the entry initialled by the course organiser. The completed CREEF must be returned to the course tutor by the end of registration week.

It is possible to change courses after the CREEF form is submitted, but this entails completing a change of course unit form obtainable from the faculty office (Life Sciences office in Drayton House).

Popular option courses

The table below show some courses taken by Speech Science/Speech Communication students in previous years plus some new relevant courses.

These courses may not run every year. Some courses may have pre-requisites.

There are many other courses available in the College; you can use the Course unit finder provided by the Life Sciences Faculty to help you find courses in the faculty. Please contact the Speech Communication programme tutor for more information.
