Innervation of the Organ of Corti
90-95% of afferent fibres in the auditory nerve are myelinated and synapse with one and only one inner hair cell (IHC). But one IHC can have a number of fibres synapsing with it ( ?10-30). There are also rare unmyelinated afferents which make multiple synapses with a group of OHCs,
Efferent neurons synapse multiply either with a group of OHCs, or on the axons of the afferent fibres. Each efferent typically synapses with more than one OHC or afferent neuron positioned along the longitudinal dimension of the Organ of Corti.
