Feedback from previous students (2004 presentation)
As
someone who
didn’t know much about the area at the outset, I found the lectures
very
pleasant to read and easy to follow. The buildup from simple to more
complex
was done very well, the content was interesting, and examples were very
clear.
Also, little bits of humour and quirkiness were much appreciated!
Very
concise and
clear. Even though I| had previous knowledge of RT there were many
things that
I suddenly understood much clearer after having read the lectures. I
tried to
read as many references as I could and really liked the fact that you
had put a
lot of work into making so many references available online – it is
obviously
so much easier just to access a web page and read an article when you
have a
few minutes to spare than taking the time to go to the library and find
the
book.
Excellent,
and
very rewarding due to the varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds as
well as
the different levels of familiarity with RT itself, even though some
people
contributed much more to the discussions than others; however the ‘no
pressure’ policy was very appreciated
by those for whom RT was as new as myself.
The
lecture notes
are excellent. Before I attended the course I had read quite a lot on
relevance
theory, but I didn’t really gain much and still didn’t quite now what
RT is
doing. The lecture notes help a lot. They explain very clearly the
essential
concepts of RT and let readers gain a basic but firm understanding of
the
subject. I very much appreciate the writing style of Prof. Wilson,
always very
clear, precise and to the point.
Fantastic:
clear
and readable, even for non-linguists. A lot of good examples. Frequent
repetitions of the same ideas and concepts throughout the course, which
helped
remember them better.
I
have greatly
benefited from this course. It has opened up new research areas and
possibilities of the applicability of the model for me. I would not
hesitate to
recommend it. In fact, I have already done so.
