SPSC1003 - Phonetic Science: Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology

This course provides a rigorous introduction to the analysis, description and classification of speech sounds (Phonetics) and to their systematic use in spoken language (Phonology). The descriptive emphasis is on articulatory phonetics (sound production). The pronunciation of normal adult English is studied in some detail. Students also learn about a range of sounds found in other languages, about child speech and about the speech associated with some pathological conditions.
