PLING302 - Advanced Topics in Speech Perception

The course will include a range of topics, based on the students' interests and current trends in this scientific field. These might typically include: theories of speech development; second-language learning and accent; atypical populations (e.g., cochlear implants, aphasia); speech perception under noisy conditions; perception of talker characteristics; perception of clear and spontaneous speech. Each week will involve a critical discussion of a set of core readings that will be assigned each week. One student per week will be required to read these and related papers in greater depth, and to lead the group discussion. The lecturer will help moderate the discussion, raise issues, and provide additional background. The teaching methods are designed to bridge the gap between lecture-based teaching and the kinds of reading, discussion, and writing activities that are typical for working scientists and research students. Each session will last for two hours (once a week for 10 weeks), and there will be an additional ten required attendances of talks by visiting researchers that will be integrated with the main discussion sessions.

EFxHist - Fundamental Frequency Histograms

EFxHist is a program to analyse joint speech and laryngograph recordings. EFxHist locates each pitch period in the laryngograph waveform and produces statistical analyses including distributions of fundamental frequency, closed-quotient, jitter and shimmer.

ESECTION - Speech signal cross-sections

ESection is a free program for calculating and displaying spectral and other related analyses of sections of a speech signal. It can be used to demonstrate the different spectral properties of elements of speech. It can also calculate an LPC spectrum, autocorrelation and cepstrum analyses, and can display the signal as a waveform or as a spectrogram. It automatically finds formant and fundamental frequency values.

FAROSON - The Auditory Lighthouse

FAROSON is a free program for displaying a real-time scrolling coloured pattern from speech sounds. The aim is to construct a pattern that reflects our subjective sensations of loudness, pitch and timbre. The program may be useful in teaching about the nature of sound sensation.
