Reading Groups

Reading groups

Reading groups in the department are informal groups which meet to discuss a particular paper or article. These groups meet on a regular basis in term time and are open to all.

Minimalist Reading Group

The minimalist reading group (MRG) is a group made up of mainly staff and postgraduates from the department of Phonetics and Linguistics at UCL who share an interest in minimalist syntax. Linguists from other departments or other colleges are very welcome to join us. The group meets every two weeks or so.

Phonology Reading Group

The Phonology Reading Group comprises members - staff and students - from several institutes, including UCL, SOAS, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and Cambridge, as well as international visitors. Meetings take place almost every week during winter and spring terms (some meetings occur during the summer term too).

Meetings take the form of discussions of recent papers or of informal presentations of research in progress. In the former case, a member of the group summarises and leads the discussion of a paper that has been circulated in advance. In the latter case, members have the chance to present their work to the group, often as a way of testing ideas or practising talks before conferences.

The group occasionally hosts talks by internationally renowned invited speakers. Recent guests have included Paul de Lacy, Noel Burton-Roberts, James Scobbie and Janet Pierrehumbert.

Venue: Room 5, 20 Gordon Square
Time: Wednesdays, 14.00-15.30

If you want to join the group or have any queries, email Nina Topintzi: .
