  • Yod The name of the symbol [j] and its sound.
  • Yorkshire assimilation A feature of some accents of the north of England, not only those in Yorkshire, which involves the change from a voiced consonant to its voiceless counterpart when immediately followed by a voiceless sound.  For example: the word bad  is usually  [bad], but the phrase bad time  is pronounced [bat taɪm].
  • Zero Also called antiresonance. An area in the frequency domain of the spectrum of a sound characterised by a loss of energy due to the filtering effect of the vocal tract.
  • Zero crossing In speech processing, any point at which a waveform's amplitude value changes sign, that is, changes from positive to negative or vice versa.
