- Yorkshire assimilation A feature of some accents of
the north of England, not only those in Yorkshire, which involves the change
from a voiced consonant to its voiceless counterpart when immediately followed
by a voiceless sound. For example: the word bad is usually
[bad], but the phrase bad time is pronounced
[bat taɪm].
- Zero Also called antiresonance. An area in the frequency domain of the spectrum of a sound characterised by a loss of energy due to the filtering effect of the vocal tract.
- Zero crossing In speech processing, any point at which a waveform's
amplitude value changes sign, that is, changes from positive to negative or vice
versa.
