endings <-en>Of course in monosyllables the ending <-en> is /en/ as in men ten. In word-final unstressed syllables, however, there are two possibilities: /In/ and /@n/. The latter seems to be on the increase. There are a number of words which, for many speakers, still have /In/: chicken kitchen linen women are a few examples. Most other words have /@n/, either obligatorily or as an alternative to /In/. The safest course is to consult a pronouncing dictionary. |
