Yet again <-se>

Tip 23 and Tip 42 dealt with some aspects of the pronunciation of the sequence <-se>. Have a look at them to remind yourself. Here are some more groups of words where <-se> is pronounced /s/ even though it is preceded by a vowel.

<-ase> = /@s/ : carcase

<-ise> = /Is/ : mortise practise premise promise treatise

<-ise> = /aIs/ : concise merchandise paradise precise

<-oise> = /@s/ : porpoise tortoise

<-oose> = /u:s/ : goose loose moose noose (but choose = /tSu:z/ and gooseberry = /"gUzbri/)

<-ose> = /@Us/ : close(adj) dose morose

<-ose> = /@s/purpose
