English Pronunciation Tip of the Day

Tip 24

Category: Word endings
Author: JAM

<-ment>

In Tip 4 we saw that the ending -ate has two different pronunciations. The same is true of the ending -ment, which is pronounced /m@nt/ if the word is a noun and /ment/ if the word is a verb. Examples:

This is an implement for sharpening knives.
/"DIs Iz @n "Impl@m@nt f@ "SA:p@nIN "naIvz/
When shall we implement the changes?
/"wen S@l wi "Impl@ment D@ "tSeIndZ@z/
I've lost a very important document.
/aIv "lQst @ "veri Im"pO:t@nt "dQkjUm@nt/
These decisions have to be documented accurately.
