English Pronunciation Tip of the Day Tip 159 Category:
Spelling-to-sound <gh>The digraph gh is always pronounced /g/ word-initially, as in ghastly gherkin ghetto ghost ghoul. It is also pronounced /g/ in the middle of a few words like aghast moghul yoghurt. At the end of a word it is never pronounced /g/. Here the digraph is usually silent, but in some words it represents /f/, as in laugh cough. See Tip 47 and Tip 53 for details. |
