The placename ending -borough

The word borough is pronounced /"bVr@/ when it stands as a word in its own right. However, it also occurs as the final element in many placenames in the UK. In these circumstances it is usually pronounced /br@/ or /b@r@/. Here are some examples:

Knaresborough /"ne@zbr@/
Loughborough /"lVfbr@/
Middlesborough /"mIdlzbr@/

The same is true if the ending is <-burgh> as in Edinburgh /"edInbr@/.
