Where the spelling is <a>, the pronunciation is never /V/ !
It's often /{/ (bad, stand, apple), or /A:/ (father, cart), or /@/ (ago, allow, comma). There are other possibilities (square, watch, warm, village, play,...). But it is never /V/.
