Senior Research Fellow
Dept. of Phonetics & Linguistics, UCL
(Jan 2002-June 2005)
Professional
- Research interests are phonologically based
automatic speech recognition, speech processing and computational
linguistics in general. Have a look at some of my linguistics papers.
- Latest project: WGNet, a 1-year ESRC-funded project led by Dick Hudson.
- Earlier: I worked on the UCL component
of the Synface project with Andy Faulkner and Catherine Siciliano,
an EU-funded collaboration to develop a telephone-based communication
aid for the hearing-impaired using synthetic talking heads.
- Prior to that I worked as a consultant to
the Centre for Speech &
Language Research, University of Colorado at
Boulder,
developing a prototype reading tutor based on the CSLU Speech Toolkit. You can download a copy of the code from here. It's written in the
scripting language Tcl/Tk which is used throughout the Toolkit.
- Prior to that I worked on “Project HAL” - Automatic Speech Recognition
using Government Phonology - based first at the SOAS linguistics department,
then later at Root Mean Square in Longmont, Colorado.
- From July 2004 to June 2005 I was joint President (as well as P&L departmental rep) for the UCL branch of AUT (Association of University Teachers, now UCU), the union for academic, research and related staff in the British pre-1992 universities.
