Practical syntax. (May 1995) wp5, ps
The text of an elementary lecture, introducing Word Grammar and showing how it can be applied in L1 teaching, L2 teaching and the study of `complex communication'.
HPSG without PS? (August 1995) wp5, ps
Comparison between Word Grammar and Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar, suggesting a compromise notation and showing some advantages of using dependencies rather than phrase structure. Gives an earlier version of the `No-tangling' principle discussed in "Discontinuity", and mentions some of the same empirical evidence; also discusses a (partially unsuccessful) analysis of Partial VP Fronting in German and Dutch, and discusses the consequences of the new view of dependency structure for binding.
Towards a nation of linguists? Some fantasies about future research. wp5, ps
A non-technical speech given at the offices of the Centre for Information on Language Teaching in London at the launch of their second survey of current UK research in FL, EFL and ESL teaching and learning. It's vital for us to overcome our national block about language-learning, but we don't really know how to do it - hence the urgent need for fundamental research.
What is a word? (July 1996) wp5, ps
Word Grammar has so far only recognised `words', but maybe we should distinguish `in-words' (morphological/phonological words) from `out-words' (syntactic and semantic words), and perhaps allow other distinctions as well. Surveys the various logically possible mismatches between word-sized units, and criticises arguments by Bresnan & Mchombo and by Mohanan in favour of c-structure and f-structure words. It accepts the spirit of the Lexical Integrity principle and offers a new interpretation. |
