Abstract

I agree with Edmondson about the need to find general cognitive principles which apply to language as well as other areas of cognition; but I disagree over his specific proposal about temporal ordering. I argue that large-scale events are ordered pairwise, rather than related to a shared time-line as he claims. The shared time-line may be appropriate for small-scale events such as those inside a single word.
