Some web sites suitable for linguistically talented children.

Last updated 16 Sept 2002

(For possible addition to the DfES web sites for English and Modern Foreign Languages (MFL).)

This is a temporary site put up by Dick Hudson for the LAGB's Education Committee. If you can suggest any more sites for this list, please mail me. The final list will be put up in the name of the LAGB.

Intended for schools

The Linguistics Olympics - a collection of linguistic puzzles for 11-18 year olds, graded for difficulty; e.g. work out (from the data presented) how to say "Keone has one brother." in Hawaiian. Highly recommended.

VISL - a site run by a Danish university for teaching school children to do grammatical analysis (in English or any of 20 other languages); e.g. zap adverbs in fast-flying sentences, or build structure trees for sentences.

Living Words - the British Library's resources for schools, including some on the history of English words.

Greetings! - "Hello" and "Goodbye" in hundreds of languages, including some examples of non-Roman scripts and some audio clips.

General resources suitable for schools

Ethnologue - the definitive list of all the world's 6,800 languages with a page about each. A wonderful resource for research.

yourDictionary - Free (but very elementary) internet grammars of 100 languages; e.g. learn how to count in Arabic.
