Changing network password for Phonetics and Linguistics network

Your network password required for email, network printing, network disk access
etc is stored on a Departmental server. The password used to access your PC is stored
on your PC. These passwords can be the same or different. If they are different you
will be prompted for your network password the first time you try to access a networked
disk after logging in to your PC.

Ensure you choose a secure password at least 7 characters long, which is difficult to
guess, not in any dictionary of any language; no proper nouns, including names
of
"famous" real or fictitious characters; no common acronyms
no simple variations of first
or last names; no more than three characters from a substring of any of the above.
Include a mix of upper and lower case, numbers and other non alphabetic characters.

Any insecure passwords will be detected and the login disabled.
You must change this password at least every 4 months. Otherwise your login will be
disabled.

To change your network password:-

You need to log in to the Phonetics & Linguistics password server,
bell.phon.ucl.ac.uk using an SSH client program as per instructions below.
You can't use telnet for this.

If you don't have an SSH client program on your PC or don't know what one of
these is, get one called putty from:-

http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty.exe Save this to your Windows desktop then double click on the putty icon. On the Putty Configuration menu which appears:- Click on ssh sothat 22 appears in the window labelled "port" In the Host Name window enter the name of the computer you want to log in to such as bell.phon.ucl.ac.uk. In the Saved Sessions window enter an identifier for this computer such as bell. Click save. The name bell should appear in the window below this. Now, whenever you want to connect to bell using ssh, double click on the putty icon on the Windows desktop then double click on bell in the window which appears. This should give the bell login prompt. On the first connection from a PC it will ask if you trust the computer you are connecting to is really the one you want. It you accept then you will not be prompted again from this PC unless the encryption key is changed on the server. For more information including ssh clients for Apple Macs see www.openssh.org/windows.html
Enter your phon/ling user name at login prompt (usually your first name) Enter your network password at password prompt. press RETURN until you see the Unix % prompt - eg bell% type: passwd
Follow prompts to change your password:-
You will be prompted for your current password. This may include separate prompts for
your SMB (for Windows logins) and your UNIX password (for ssh, putty sftp logins).
Enter your current password correctly for both of these.
You will then be prompted to change your UNIX password.
If you didn't type your password correctly you will get the message "Authentication failure"
or "Authentication token manipulation error" and will be returned to prompt when you will
need to type "passwd" again and enter your password correctly at the prompts.
After changing you UNIX password, your SMB password will also be updated.
